Drop-In Centre
News: We have now secured a new building and work is beginning on our Drop-In Centre.
We will be developing a drop-in centre for children and families. For many children and their families school is viewed in a negative light where they have failed or were excluded from. The drop-in centre will be targeted at this group and provide services designed to address the barriers they face.
We will establish a multi-disciplinary centre which will over time offer a wide range of services for children and young people up to the age of 23. At a basic level the centre will provide a safe space for children and young people to come to for advice and support. Family members concerned about the wellbeing of a child will be encouraged to drop in for informal support. Formal assessments will be conducted and referrals to statutory agencies will be instigated as appropriate.
Our aim is to present a friendly and relaxed atmosphere – domestic rather than institutional. It is our experience that the provision of cooked food – in a shared informal way – provides the right message of welcome and an attractive café/sitting area will be at the core of the centre.
On a more ambitious level we would aim to provide a service to children who self refer; youngsters who to all intents and purposes have experienced difficulties in living within a family setting. The aim of the centre would then be to provide the children with a form of substitute family experience which helps repair their sense of loss and works through their traumas; a legacy, for example, of their being subjected to ongoing sexual and physical abuse.
Many of the children could attend 6 days per week and would be supported by a team of key workers, social workers, teachers, alternative therapists, psychologists, nurses, arts therapists, counsellors and youth offending workers. Social activities for children and families will also be available.
The Centre will also provide a space to meet parents who feel uncomfortable in going to a school to discuss their children. This could also provide an opportunity for parent support groups to meet and to offer group therapy.
